Pomegranate has become one of the fastest growing trends in the food industry, not only for its great taste but also for its exceptional health benefits. In addition to exceptional clarity, rich colour and a distinctive and appealing flavour, pomegranates also have a hidden bonus: a wealth of vitamins and minerals. Long recognised for their healthful properties, pomegranates contain vitamins A, B, and C, iron, calcium and other essential minerals. They are also rich in antioxidants that are beneficial for blood circulation and for the heart. Pomegranates are effective in helping to prevent heart disease, arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and in easing inflammatory conditions. According to research recently conducted on pomegranate juice and seed oil by the University of California and the Institute of Technology in Israel, pomegranates neutralize free radicals three times more effectively than green tea or red wine. According to the study, ‘If consumed daily over a long period of time, the powerful antioxidants in pomegranates may help to combat cancer and may also prevent hardening of the arteries.’ The fruit may even help people suffering from ailments such as Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Studies have also found that plant-based estrogens, such as those found in pomegranates, could help alleviate menopausal and post-menopausal symptoms.
For the first time, thanks to Rimon Winery, we can now enjoy the ancient crimson fruit in the form of world-class, wines made from 100 percent pomegranate juice that retain the succulent flavours and healthful properties of the pomegranate fruit even after they have been fermented into wine.
